Food & Forums

Soooo I'm upset at a forum I frequent. If I had male wobbly bits, I'd tell the lot of them to suck the left one. So instead I'll just curse a few select people with all the vehemence I can muster (in my own head). There is one particular rule that they don't allow you to put any references to your website (name of website and/or URL) if you have a link to it in your signature, anywhere else (in profiles, other fields, etc). Fine, whatever. Not that my coupon blog here could ever compete, but that's their rules.

However, I had "Uses: Money Saving Jutsu" in a different part of my profile, and I STILL got into trouble for it. Really? I don't see those words anywhere in the name of my website or the URL. Can we say "anal retentive"? It is almost like when a cashier makes up rules to go along with coupon redemption!

Anyhoo.

I haven't couponed in a while, and haven't even kept up with purchasing my inserts/newspapers on a weekly basis up until a few weeks ago. I just haven't needed anything, at least as far as health and beauty items go. However I will be starting up again though just to get my stockpile up to muster. I've finally run out of dog food but I plan on purchasing Iams for small/toy dogs, because my Pom really seems to like it. But I've ALSO been contemplating putting Johnnie on a form of Primal diet as well. All the dog food seems to be primarily made of wheat as the bulk of the kibble, and just like us, they were made to eat meat and other things. What amazes me is Johnnie will scoop up veggies or fruit that might accidentally fall to the floor during preparation. I don't know what is necessarily good for him but I think it is at least worth reading about.

I am happy to say I've lost at least 10 solid pounds from eating this way, in just a little over a month and my husband has lost about the same amount. I started calling how we eat Primal as opposed to Paleo. People just don't understand the word unless I explain it.

In a nutshell, it is this:

"I eat real food – fresh, natural food like meat, vegetables and fruit. I choose foods that are nutrient-dense, with lots of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, over foods that have more calories but less nutrition. And food quality is important – I’m careful about where my meat, seafood and eggs come from, and buy organic local produce as often as possible.

This is not a “diet” – I eat as much as I need to maintain strength, energy, activity levels and a healthy body weight. I aim for well-balanced nutrition, so I eat both animals and a significant amount of plants. I’m not lacking carbohydrates – I just get them from vegetables and fruits instead of bread, cereal or pasta. And my meals are probably higher in fat than you’d imagine, but fat is a healthy source of energy when it comes from high-quality foods like avocado, coconut and grass-fed beef.

Eating like this is ideal for maintaining a healthy metabolism and reducing inflammation within the body. It’s good for body composition, energy levels, sleep quality, mental attitude and quality of life. It helps eliminate sugar cravings and reestablishes a healthy relationship with food. It also works to minimize your risk for a whole host of lifestyle diseases and conditions, like diabetes, heart attack, stroke and autoimmune."

Apparently, this Coupon Ninja can hide VERY well...

Indeed! I've been away from couponing for nearly a month again - I haven't even bought papers/inserts for the past three weeks. I simply have everything we need when it comes to the non-food items, and we've been only buying fresh foods and meats for the most part (though I did cash in on a good deal on 12 packs of Diet Coke at Stracks - $7.77 for four).

I don't know if I want to go back into couponing "hard core" as it were, because I've been able to NOT spend all my money. In fact, after paying bills I have a surplus of around $1k, and I get my next check THIS Friday.

On the flip side, I purchased an Alienware m17x R3 laptop which cost me about $2,013 after taxes XD I nerd raged when I found out I could get a credit line with Dell and now I have a fantastic laptop with which to play World of Warcraft XD I figure, since I no longer have a payment with Best Buy for my iPad, I can just go right into paying off the new laptop on a bi-weekly basis. I'm going to try to pay $250-$300 a month on it (hoping I can schedule automatic payments well into the future like I can with my HSBC credit card!).

Specs and pictures soon to follow! I haven't actually seen and/or played with my new laptop yet - I am currently at work but my husband informed me that it was delivered today! My train is late and I'm just waiting in antici-----pation! to be home to see it.

$5 Walgreens Challenge

I originally saw a post entitled "$5 Walgreens Challenge" from the website Tia's Savings Cents. I thought it was a very neat idea but didn't pay it any attention since, you know, it was when I first started couponing. However, I am now very tempted to pretend to "start over" in couponing and stockpiling and feature a similar challenge on my blog.

Because let's face it, I DON'T need any more bodywash, shampoo, toothpaste, or handsoap for a long while! At least, any that I need to pay for. I'm all down for getting any of the afore-mentioned items if it means completely free (paying only taxes, of course). Plus it would also show how to start couponing, stockpiling and all doing it on a budget.

I guess what got me thinking about this was a comment to a post on a Facebook community called TLC - Please Remove Jamie Kirlew from your episode of Extreme Couponing! Now don't get me wrong - some people on that community naysay everyone who stockpiles for longer than 3 months - but let's face it in this economy and rising prices, I don't think it is a bad thing! I also did NOT see this particular episode (in fact, I've not seen any of the new ones), but I have read loads of information online about how this Jamie chick basically committed lots of coupon fraud. Anyhoo, I saw this:

"Ok...After seeing crazy mustard lady buy 3 lifetimes worth of mustard on the show, it has me wondering...If you only have a $50 budget, when are you buying your meat products? How are you making any sort of meal out of your food budjet if you are not buying much food?"
And also:
"It would be really nice if they would give us a starting point for those newly broke people!"
Granted, both you and I know that TLC created that show for the ratings, and if you've read up on any of the "behind the scenes" info you know that TLC even coached some of the people on the show on what they wanted them to do, or what to say, etc. and of course they wouldn't show you how to start couponing, because where is the fun in teaching (I called it "The Loser Channel" haha).

However, I have been neglecting the "food" side of couponing. I will say one thing though - there are a lot of coupons out there for unhealthy foods (in a word: crap) and I really don't want anything to do with that sort of food. For a long time now me and my husband have wanted to get on the Paleo bandwagon, and also to start working out on a regular basis. So basically our needs should look something like this: veggies, meats, fruits, nuts, fats & oils and stay away from the inside of grocery stores.

So maybe I will try some sort of modified-challenge. $5 or so to spend at Walgreens or CVS like I was a nub couponer and aspiring stockpiler, and a certain amount for grocery store shopping.

Which reminds me, I really need to plug in our freezer chest and get that going so hopefully I can fill it with frozen meats and other goodies from shopping!

Walgreens 5/08

Walgreens has Clean & Clear bodywash on sale for $5.99 and also as a buy one get one free deal. Carefree pantyliners are also on sale for $.99 each. Now there is a coupon out as well for buy one get one free on the Clean & Clear bodywashes! From what people report it seems like it is a "your mileage may vary" on whether or not your Walgreens will accept it, AS WELL AS if your Walgreens will even have it on the shelf! Apparently I don't live by shelf-clearers, because I never really have a problem finding what I want to purchase. Anyhoo, I made sure (at the beauty counter) that it was OK by the manager to use this coupon in conjunction with the sale to get two free bottles, and they said yes (this was at a very coupon-friendly store in my opinion, but it is also on my way to work hence a bit out of the way for me).

1 [blue bottle] Clean & Clear bodywash $5.99
1 [orange bottle] Clean & Clear bodywash $5.99
1 Carefree pantyliners $.99
1 20oz Diet Coke pop $1.69
-$5.99 Walgreens b1g1 free sale Clean & Clear
-$5.99 Clean & Clear B1G1 FREE 3/27 SS
-$.99 Carefree 5/08 SS
Total: $2.30 ($1.69 + tax)

Since I scored a few inserts at work for free, I'll be able to get about 8 more of the Carefree pantyliners, and I have two more of the b1g1 free Clean & Clear coupons. I am planning on going to Walmart tomorrow to try the price-matching thing, for funsies.

We [husband and I] also had another transaction at a different Walgreens and I was able to get another Gilette Fusion Proglide razor using a $4/1 mfr coupon and $5 in RR's I had. So now I have 2 $5 RR's from P&G. Not sure if I will try to save them for next week or just purchase something we need from Walgreens (like more toilet paper!).
